Bent Severin

Bent Severin was a Danish architect first. He designed hotels, glassware for Holmegaard, and the iconic Gammel Dansk bottle — one of Denmark's most recognized packaging designs.

When he turned to steak cutlery for Gense, he brought an architect's pursuit of perfection in every material. The result is Old Farmer: rustic, refined, and built for the grill.

Bent Severin, an industrial designer who is considered one of Denmark's leading sculptors and designers.

An architect's eye

Born in Copenhagen in 1925, Severin trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture, graduating in 1952.

After working in Denmark's defense building service, he founded Bent Severin Design in 1960. His major architectural projects include the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel in Copenhagen and several landmark Danish hotels. His glassware for Holmegaard and his design for the Gammel Dansk bottle remain in production decades later.

He is recorded in the British Museum's archive of significant Danish designers.

The Old Farmer collection

Severin combined stainless steel with wooden handles in a robust, no-nonsense design that's at once rustic and refined. Old Farmer became one of Gense's all-time bestsellers in Denmark and Scandinavia.

For American grilling culture — where a perfectly cooked ribeye deserves the same care as the table — Old Farmer is the elevated answer to plastic-handled BBQ utensils. It is the Gense piece designed not for the dining room, but for the deck.
